Our service area

We cover the Sutton Coldfield, North Birmingham, Walsall, Tamworth and Lichfield areas of the West Midlands. For more detailed information see our service area page. We service most types of in-home electronic products.

Which makes do we repair?

We repair most makes of TV, Plasma, LCD, DVD, Video Recorder, Hi-Fi and audio equipment providing any parts required are available and the set is no more than about twelve years old. One exception is repairs to Bang & Olufsen equipment, we suggest you contact East TV who are a B&O authorised service agent.

We are an approved Panasonic Digital Service Centre, a Toshiba Approved Service Centre, a Sanyo Approved Service Centre and a Hitachi Approved Service Centre, as well as being service agents/account holders for JVC, Philips, and Technics.

We are appointed service agents for the Panasonic Digital Service Network, and our service engineers have successfully completed training at Panasonic's Training Centre in Bracknell, enabling us to carry out repairs to Panasonic Plasma Screens, LCD Screens and DVD Recorders, as well as CRT Televisions, DVD Players, Home Cinema, Video Recorders etc.

If you have a Panasonic, Toshiba, Hitachi or Sanyo audio-visual product which is faulty, in or out of warranty, we will be pleased to assist you, regardless of where you originally purchased your set from. For Plasma TV and LCD TV over 22" that are under warranty we will call out to you home free of charge, providing you live within our service area. Note that the lamps on LCD Projectors are not covered under warranty.

Other manufacturers have differing policies regarding the servicing of Plasma & LCD televisions, some still carry out their own in-house repairs, others do not, please telephone or e-mail us with your requirement and we will do our best to oblige wherever possible.

If you have an extended warranty we have arrangements with most insurance companies to carry out repairs on their behalf. If you require our services, just give us a call with your warranty cover details to hand.

Arrange a repair

For larger items such as television sets (over 22") we offer a call out service to your home. Please telephone our local office to request a service call, alternatively, you may email us at service@mikefletcher.co.uk. When contacting us to arrange a repair please ensure that you have the make and model number of the faulty set to hand. These details can normally be found on the rear of the equipment.

For smaller items such as small screen and portable televisions, combined TV/VCRs, DVD & video recorders, and audio items we suggest that you bring your repair along to our fully equipped workshop at 10 Bodington Road, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield B75 5ET. This enables us to keep our costs to a minimum. Details of our location.

An administration charge of £12 (plus VAT) is charged whenever we have found there to be no detectable fault with the set, this charge will be credited to any subsequent repair on the same equipment brought back within four weeks.

Important points to note if you are bringing your set into our workshop for repair and/or if we are calling out to your home to carry out a repair:

  • Please remember to bring in the remote control handset if your set has one.

  • Other accessories, such as standard mains leads, instruction booklets, loop aerials, detachable control door/flaps and loose fitments, will not normally be required, so please leave them at home.

  • If you are bringing in a Hi-Fi separate we may need the entire system if the unit will not function on it's own.

  • Many DVD Player/Home Cinema combinations have the amplifier and the power supply housed in the sub-woofer, so please remember to bring this along, together with the interconnecting lead.

  • If you are bringing in a DVD Recorder with an integral hard disk drive, to prevent damage to the HD drive, please ensure that you power down the unit before disconnecting it.

  • When repairing recorders with an integral hard disk drive we cannot guarantee the contents of the hard drive. Some fault conditions necessitate the need for us to erase the hard drive or it may be faulty in which case the contents are lost. We cannot be held liable for any loss of recordings.

  • When bringing a DVD Recorder in for repair for not reading, writing or finalising discs etc., it is often helpful to leave a sample disc with us.

  • During the repair of your AV equipment to improve the reliability of your equipment we may update the firmware. We cannot be held liable for any loss of recordings.

  • If you do decide to bring in a Plasma TV, rather than book a call-out, please ensure that the unit is transported in a vertical position at all times, otherwise the screen may be irretrievably damaged.

  • LCD and Plasma screens are easily damaged, ensure that you wrap them up and pack them well, preferably using the original packaging.

  • When calling out to repair wall mounted flat panel televisions, we will normally only remove the equipment from the wall bracket providing the distance between the base of the set and the floor does not exceed one metre. This applies to both under warranty, insurance and chargeable repairs. Special arrangements may be made to handle equipment in higher locations, but at an additional cost. Alternatively you may wish to arrange removal of the set from the wall bracket onto a suitable stand before we call.

  • Due to difficulties in obtaining spare parts we will not normally undertake repairs on sets that are much older than 12 years.

  • If the set is under warranty, please bring along your original receipt or other proof of purchase.

  • * Loan televisions are subject to availability.

Important: When contacting us to arrange a repair please ensure that you have the make and model number of the faulty set to hand. These details can normally be found on the rear of the equipment.

Our Estimate & Call-Out Policy for Older Technology

When we call out to customer's homes to repair conventional CRT Televisions,  the following free estimate policy applies:
If after examining your set the repair charge is going to be less than £55 (excluding VAT), we will automatically go ahead and proceed with the repair in your home, this is not a minimum charge. If the repair is going to exceed £55 (excluding VAT) then we will give you a
free no obligation estimate before proceeding with the repair. When booking a service call this policy will be explained to you and it is a condition of booking a service call that you agree to this policy. This free estimate/call-out policy may not always be available in the Walsall area.

For equipment such as conventional CRT Televisions, Video Recorders, DVD Players and Hi-Fi units brought into our premises for repair the following free estimate policy applies:
If after examining your set the repair charge is going to be less than £50 (excluding VAT), we will automatically go ahead and proceed with the repair, this is not a minimum charge. If the repair is going to exceed £50 (excluding VAT) then we will give you a
free no obligation estimate before proceeding with the repair.

Should you subsequently choose to decline our estimate there will be no charge levied. In some cases where we suspect that the Cathode Ray Tube may be faulty or that a service call will not be fruitful, we reserve the right to charge a small inspection fee. We also make a charge for preparing written reports where has a set has been damaged due to a lightning strike or damage sustained by a set being knocked over or dropped etc.

Our Estimate & Call-Out Policy for Newer Technology

For DVD Recorders, Computers (inc. Laptops), LCD, Plasma and Projection Televisions the following estimate policy applies: Due to their complex nature finding a fault is often more involved and takes longer, we therefore charge a non-refundable inspection fee, payable in advance. After examining your set we will provide you with an estimated cost of the work required. Should you wish us to proceed with the work we will deduct the inspection fee from the final cost. In some cases the inspection fee may cover the cost of the actual work required, leaving you with nothing further to pay.

In order to ensure that scrap equipment is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner and to keep our inspection fees as low as possible we only return working equipment to a customer's home. Unless you advise us otherwise, unrepaired equipment will normally be recycled by a licensed waste management company at no further cost to the customer. Alternatively the equipment can  be made available to be collected from our workshop on request.

Please note that with some less common brands we may have difficulty in sourcing spare parts. Whilst we will make every effort to obtain any necessary parts, our inspection fee will still apply, even if we cannot complete a repair due to parts being unavailable. The fee structure is as follows:

  * DVD
Recorders
*Computers (inc. Laptops) LCD Television
 up to 26"
LCD Television
26" up to 40"
LCD Television 40" & over Projection Television Plasma Television
& Monitors

Calling out to customer's home & collecting set £35.00 £40.00 £40.00 £45.00 £50.00 £50.00 £50.00

Inspection fees include VAT.

* We normally request that you bring along these smaller items into our workshop.

§ Terms and conditions apply

No Crystal Ball!

Sorry, but we don't have a crystal ball. Therefore in most cases it is impossible for us to offer a diagnosis over the telephone without seeing the set. Even if it is a piece of equipment that we are especially familiar with, appearances can be deceptive. A particular symptom can often be caused by a number of possible different faulty components.

So if you want to know exactly what the problem is with your set please allow us the time to take the equipment apart and diagnose what the fault is, which can often take quite sometime..

LCD Televisions - Broken Screens

During our working week we frequently receive calls from distressed customers who have had some sort of  mishap with their LCD television. Unfortunately few people realise just how delicate an LCD panel is compared to the old tubed televisions.

The picture above on the left shows a smashed LCD panel caused by a child throwing a Nintendo Wii paddle at the set. The one on the right shows a smashed LCD panel caused by a child throwing a toy at the screen. However, folk have damaged LCD sets by falling onto them, elbowing them, throwing ornaments, hitting them with a walking stick, etc. etc.

As an LCD panel is not repairable, the complete screen will have to be replaced. In almost every instance this will render the set beyond economical repair as the LCD panel is the most expensive part of the set. By the time you add together the cost of the panel, labour charge and VAT  it is usually cheaper to replace the complete set.

If you are unlucky to have a mishap with your LCD television we suggest you speak to your insurance company, most household contents policies include accidental damage cover. If your insurer's require a quote this can be provided for an inspection fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Installation service

If you have purchased a television or a similar piece of equipment from elsewhere, you may have found that installation is not included or is woefully inadequate.  Alternatively you may have felt that you could install the set yourself, but have been unsuccessful.

We are willing to provide a complete installation service, which includes tuning in the set, construction of the stand or cabinet and the connections of all other peripheral equipment such as VCRs, digital set-top boxes etc. We also fully demonstrate the operation of the equipment to you. Our installation charges start from £40 (inc. VAT).

We also offer a complete installation service for Plasma and LCD Flat Panels, including wall mounting. The setting-up of surround sound systems is also a service that we provide.

Another up and coming 'must have' feature is iPlayer from the BBC, this is a service that lets you catch up with television and radio programmes from the seven days that you may have missed. Up to now you could only access this service from a PC. However, if you have an integrated  freesat television or box you will soon be able to use BBC iPlayer directly. This entails connecting your TV or box to a broadband network connection, which is something that we can install and set-up for you. Please contact us for further details.

Aerial Checking Service

As part of our installation service our engineers have a Lacuna DTM Mk.IV professional Digital Terrestrial Digital Meter available to check your aerial installation and ensure that it meets the standard required for trouble-free viewing.

Digital (Freeview) television transmissions are divided into six multiplexes (MPX). Unless each multiplex result shows a 'PASS' you are very likely to experience difficulties in receiving some digital television channels, either showing no signal at all or suffering from a blocking, mosaic or freezing effect.

If the test result of any of the six multiplexes listed above is ‘FAIL’ we strongly advise you to have your aerial system examined by a professional aerial contractor. We can put you in touch with one if you wish.

If required, a written report will be left with you.
